26. Alert: elevated levels of dioxins and dioxin-like PCB's in zinc oxide

GMP+ International and EFISC have informed OVOCOM of a possible zinc oxide (origin: Spain) and of products derived from zinc oxide contamination with dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs.

Within several batches of zinc oxide, the norm of  1.5 ng WHO-PCDD/FTEQ/kg has been exceeded for the sum of dioxin and dioxin-like PCB. The contaminated batches of zinc oxide are from a Spanish producer. Dioxin levels up to 7,85 ng WHO-PCDD/FTEQ/kg have been measured. An exceedance of the norm has also been determined within premixes produced on basis of the contaminated batch of zinc oxide.

So far, no implication from FCA certified companies has been recorded.

GMP+ International specifies that, at the moment, it is unknown whether several batches of contaminated zinc oxide have been distributed in the feed chain. Therefore, OVOCOM asks all FCA certified companies to be vigilant for a possible contamination of zinc oxide of this origin with dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs.
