36. Aflatoxin B1 in rice bran

By means of this newsletter, we would like to draw your attention to the purchase of rice bran from the UK.

At the end of May, we have received a notification resulting from a check which was carried out by an FCA company. It concerned a delivery of  rice bran with a level of Aflatoxin B1 which was above the maximum permissible value (45 ppb instead of 20 ppb).

The presence of Aflatoxin B1 in rice by-products is a known ‘Product-Danger’ combination. Moreover, there exists a specific monitoring on this topic in the FCA Standard (see document BT-01-3.1). The investigation has shown that the rice bran has been put onto the market by several companies affiliated with different feed schedules. In the meantime, the necessary measures have been taken to make sure that batches which could contain Aflatoxin B1 will no longer be put onto the market by this producer.

But because the size of this contamination, before the measures were taken, is not exactly known, we would like to ask you to pay particular attention to the possible presence of Aflatoxin B1 in rice bran which originates from the UK.
